Bonela residents demand equality

Bonela residents want a standard payment for their homes. They are demanding that the rental system be scrapped and that they be allowed to take ownership of homes through the buying scheme that has been offered to Wiggins 1 (KwaMasixhawulane) residents.
This was highlighted during a mass meeting held in the area in July. Bonela residents have been paying rent since 1994. A large number of them are in arrears because there was a call made for them to stop paying rent until the KwaMasixhawulane house saga was sorted out.
To date the KwaMasixha residents have signed sales agreements with the Provincial Housing Board. Bonela residents want the same option.
The sectional title holders are also demanding that council issue them with individual rate numbers. At the moment rates are paid on one body corporate number. The reason behind the demand is that people fear they may lose their homes because some non-payers are enjoying the body corporate scheme. Substantial interest and penalties have been incurred.
Another demand is that the Bonela rates need to be formalised. Property holders should pay according to the size of their properties. At the moment ‘the replacement homes’ occupiers are paying lower rates whilst the sectional title holders are paying more, directly to the council. The replacement home holders have larger properties.
Another thorny issue is the lack of community facilities such as sportsfields, worship sites and a hall. The community of Bonela is in desperate need of these facilities.

Sinothando trauma centre now open

Are you a victim of domestic violence? Has your child been abused and you don’t know who to talk to? Well, your days of worrying are over because a trauma centre has been established at the Cato Manor police station just for you.

Sinothando trauma centre has been established to assist abused women and children.
The centre is run by Cato Manor-based volunteers and is open day and night.
“Traumatised women and children can receive attention around the clock at the police station. We have been fortunate to have received two beds, two wheel chairs, six chairs and a first aid kit from the City Hospital, furniture from the Durban Child Welfare, and the Mazenod Development Programme has donated bags with towels and soap. The police have donated clothing,” said Siphiwe Mkwanazi.
The centre is manned by six volunteers who are trained in crisis counselling.
