Running for fun
Sports News

The Wiggins Secondary School organised a very successful three kilometre Fun Run through the streets of Cato Manor in May. Last year the event was not well attended, but this year it was a different story with dozens of boys and girls lining up for a crack at the trophy. As expected the boys were first to the finish line despite the girls getting a five minute head start.

Soccer mania sweeps Cato Manor

Soccer mania is sweeping through Cato Manor with no less than 54 teams participating in the annual soccer tournament scheduled to kick off on July 8. The finals will be held at the Bellair sports grounds on the weekend of 22/23 July.
The annual tournament, which has once again been organised by the CMDA and sponsored by the European Union, has grown in stature over the past four years.
One of the highlights of the tournament will be the game between the Obed Mlaba XI and the CMDA XI. Last year the CMDA XI lost by a narrow margin, but this year the team, under the leadership of Dutch player/coach Wim Eising, are hungry to avenge that loss.
All the results and photos from the tournament will be published in the next edition of IZWI.

The CMDA has helped to establish a new sports development committee which will foster the development of sports in the Cato Manor area.

Efforts by the sports committee have already born fruit. The KwaZulu-Natal Cricket Union has committed itself to invest equipment and coaching, and will be conducting a mini-cricket training session for committee members in July to familiarise them with the game.
Plans are also in the pipeline to hold mini-cricket training for members of the public at the following venues:-
Wiggins Multi-Purpose Centre sports grounds for the Old Dunbar, Fast Track and Umkhumbane communities; Cato Crest Multi-Purpose Centre sports grounds for the Cato Crest community; Bonela Secondary School sports grounds for the New Dunbar and Bonela Community; Chesterville sports grounds for the communities of Nsimbini, Jamaica, Chesterville and KwaMasixhawulane.
"It is anticipated that the training sessions will be held once a week in each area. When the game has been introduced, a tournament will be organised. It will all depend on how quickly the teams catch onto the game," said CMDA communications manager, Shelley Gielink, who is the interim chairperson of the sports committee.
Another training course has been organised with VJ Balaram of the University of Natal which will involve teaching basic sports administration skills.

For more information contact the Cato Manor Community Organisation sports co-ordinator, Zamo Ngobese at 082 8586 851 or Boykie Khanyile at 261 6640.
