Grand opening for
Bellair Shopping Centre on the cards
Shops in the new retail centre at 274 Bellair
Road will soon be open for business. Despite delays caused by heavy
summer rains, construction is expected to be completed in a month
and Cato Manor residents will be able to do their shopping close
to home.
|
The big drawcards
of the shopping centre will be a grocery shop, a hardware and builders’
supply store, a bottle store and a butchery. These shops will help
to satisfy the growing demand among Cato Manor communities for shopping
facilities close to home.
In addition, shoppers will be able to purchase goods at a range of
other retail outlets planning to set up shop at the Centre, including
a pharmacy, clothing and furniture shops and a fruit and vegetable
|
wholesaler.
There will also be a doctor and other service businesses in the centre.
The centre will provide an economic boost for Cato Manor as more than
50% of the businesses on the ground floor are owned by local residents.
A grand opening is planned for the end of August - watch out for notices
that will be posted all over Cato Manor to advertise this event. |

The Durban Metro Informal Trade Department is
currently processing applications from entrepreneurs wishing to
trade at the Bellair Market.
A total of 631 applications from traders have been
received.
Martin Kaplan of the CMDA told IZWI that successful applicants will
be announced in the middle of July.
"The selection process will happen in mid-July,
and thereafter public announcements will be made.
People should be on the look-out for posters announcing successful
applicants. They will be posted at various strategic locations around
Cato Manor, and at the market site," he said.
The market will open in August.

Sgt. Kirby heading for the UK.
The fight against crime has been a long and hard
journey for Sergeant Raymond Kirby of the Mayville Detective Unit.
But now he is retiring and will move to Coventry,
England, where he plans to pursue a career in computers.
Kirby answered the call of duty when it became apparent
that criminals were gaining the upper hand in South Africa.
|
He joined the SA Police in January 1982, and was posted to the
Mayville Detective Unit in 1987. Since then Kirby has worked tirelessly
to put criminals behind bars. His appetite for busting crime earned
him a place in the fearsome Task Team that was established in 1998
to bring stability to Cato Manor and to safeguard the speedy delivery
of the development project.
He says that being part of the Task Team was one of the highlights
of his career. "I shall miss the spirit of the people whom
I was serving. I enjoyed the comaradery with community leaders who
were eager to see their communities developing. There are sad memories
as well, like when my partner was wounded when we were making an
arrest in Cato Crest. Luckily we arrested the assailant and put
him behind bars," said the sergeant.
