Budding Woman Boxer

Since the age of ten, Phumla Ntombela knew she wanted to blaze the trail of women sports. She has been inspired by the likes of Marion Jones and Maria Matola but she did not want just any sport. She has tried everything from swimming, netball, volleyball, kung-fu and soccer.

One day she was watching the news when she heard about women boxers. She was instantly interested. “It was like a revelation. I knew there and then what I wanted to be,” said the 14-year old. The next day she went to the Chesterville Boxing Club and she has not looked back, preparing herself for a year and three months now. Though she has not fought a competitive match, she is confident that whoever comes first will get a hiding. “The reason I have not been inside the ring is that there are very few women boxers and there is no-one in my division to fight with. It’s frustrating but I will wait,” said Phumla.
