Sad farewell to annual tournament

When Santos beat Sundowns in the just concluded BP Top 8 our appetites where whetted. We were all ready for a final showdown between the defending champions Good Hope FC and a team from the Durban Institute of Technology.

But alas, it was not to be. Good Hope FC did not honour the game and did not bring the floating trophy to be contested, but instead team manager Gugulethu.... walked onto the pitch minutes before kick-off to explain the failure of his club to pitch up.

But it was too late because the referee awarded the match to Durban Institute of Technology on default.
According to Gugulethu, his team failed to pitch up because he had written to the organisers asking for a
postponement of the fixture.

“As far as I am aware the organisers did not allow us to play the final on the originally scheduled date because the grounds were not available. In the letter I wrote I tried to explain that it takes time to assemble my players because they are distributed in all corners of the country. But the organisers decided to give us short notice. That is why I have failed to honour this fixture,”said Gugulethu

Good Hope FC has won the trophy on two occasions since the tournament began. If they had successfully
defended it they would have kept it in their silverware
cabinet for good.

The Cato Manor Football Association, who are the tournament organisers, are in consultation with the South African Football Association in relation to proper disciplinary action.
