The Fun Run is part of an effort to encourage
school going children to get involved in sport.
Ruben Reddy, a sports consultant,
has been recruited to develop a sports programme that will ultimately
lead to the formation of a Cato Manor Sports Council. Once established,
the council will formulate links with other sporting bodies such
as KZN Athletics, the Natal Cricket Union etc.
“Most of these organisations have
big budgets for the development of sports in previously disadvantaged
communities but they do not reach their intended recipients because
of a lack of properly formulated structures. We hope the Council
will be used as an arm to reach out for to the budgets and other
benefits,” said Boykie Khanyile, CMDA’s sports co-ordinator.
Apart from this, the consultant’s
task is to develop a sports and recreation policy framework that
will allow for the fair representation and participation of all
sports codes existing in Cato Manor. This framework will include
the development of sporting individuals to a stage where they
can represent not only Cato Manor, but the whole country.
The first task is to prepare an
inventory by inviting all sporting organisations to fill in a
questionnaire.
Cato Manor Football Association
The Cato Manor Football Association intends kick-starting its
first ever season later this month. A total number of 36 clubs
are affiliated to the Association. The clubs will be divided into
division A and B with two clubs relegated from division A to division
B and two clubs promoted from division A into a Durban-wide zonal
league.
The final of the Cato Manor Floating
Trophy has not yet been played due to unforseen delays but the
competition has entered into the semi-final stages. It is anticipated
that the final will be staged towards the end of August. The winning
team will walk away with the trophy and a brand new soccer kit

The
eThekwini Municipal Mayor, Obed Mlaba, was on hand to launch
the Wiggins Library Internet Project. The internet connection
was installed courtesy of the New York-based Carnegie Foundation,
via the Durban Municipal Library. The computer will usher
in a whole new era of communications technology for surrounding
communities. Visitors will now be able to access world wide
information through the click of a mouse, and send and receive
emails. Apart from accessing information, members of the
community will be able to write their own CVs, and schools
will be able to do their research projects easily.
