Rookies capture trophy

Cato Manor Soccer Tournament favourites Chesterville Extension FC lost the Floating Trophy to rookies Izintandane FC by 3 goals to 2. However Izintandane had to dig deep to beat the favourites in extra time.
Chesterville Extension won the trophy at the first tournament three years ago, and since then they have brushed aside all teams who dared to cross their path, and have played in every final.
The teams were level at the end of normal time with Man of the Series, Thabo Sibiya drawing first blood for Izintandane.
But Chesterville Extension can take consolation from their Under 16s. The Chesterville youngsters outclassed Bonela Giants in every department save for the midfield which was hotly contested between the Giants’ Njabulo Mvubu and Extension’s Man of the Match Thabani Makhanya. Chesterville Extension settled the contest by 4 goals to 1.
Njabulo Mvubu was voted Man of the Series for his brilliant performances throughout the tournament.
The annual tournament, which is organised by the CMDA and sponsored by the European Union, attracted 40 teams from Cato Manor. Both winning teams will receive a new soccer kit, and losing finalists receive silver medals and soccer balls.
The final drew a large crowd including the Durban Metro Mayor, Obed Mlaba. The tournament is funded by the EU.

Wow! Is this big trophy mine? Izintandane FC’s Thabo Sibiya marvels at his trophy for his all round performance during the Cato Manor Annual Soccer Tournament.

Here comes African cricket
Cries of “howzat!” and “catchit!” are now being heard echoing around the sports fields of Cato Manor as young children play the gentlemanly game of cricket, a game recently introduced to them courtesy of Bakers’ Mini-Cricket.
The game made famous by the colonials in their white flannels has been taken to new levels by teams such as the West Indies, the Pakistanis and the Indians in recent years. Now the cricketing world is in for another booster African cricket.
The CMDA Sports Committee has been working hard to organise coaching clinics for Cato Manor residents in an effort to introduce the game here. Who knows, once the game catches on, we may see the emergence of the next Curtley Ambrose or Waqar Younis from among our youth.
Twenty-five people from the sports development committee and people from various communities have already attended training sessions courtesy of the KwaZulu-Natal Cricket Union at Kingsmead Cricket Ground.
The training sessions are to help the committees with basic knowledge of cricket so that they may teach young children. A sports leadership course is also in the offing for committee members.

The Mini-Cricket programme for Cato Manor is shown below: All the training sessions are scheduled to commence at 1 pm.
For more information contact Cato Manor Community Organisation sports co-ordinator, Zamo Ngobese at 082 8586 851, or Boykie Khanyile at 261 6640.

Some of the Cato Manor residents who attended the Bakers Mini Cricket coaching classes receive instruction on handling the cricket bat.
