People’s justice for murder
The spate of robberies and the recent murder of two service providers in the Wiggins Umkhumbane area, has driven the community to take matters into their hands. A third killing of one of the residents who refused to surrender his goods, is also linked to the same gang.
But what triggered the anger was the perceived inability of the police to act although the identities of the perpetrators were known.
Agitated members of the Wiggins Umkhumbane and the Fast Track East called a meeting and met at the corner of Dromore and Horley Road to discuss ways of ending the robberies.
The slogan-chanting crowd attacked the suspected criminals late at night and gutted three houses. The alleged robbers were found in one of the houses. One fled and one was badly beaten by the

community while another was saved by the arrival of the police.
Both the councillor and the police were called to intervene as tempers ran high and the people sought revenge for the murdered.
Police are still investigating and no-one has been formally charged.
It is believed that the two victims, a 30-year-old postman Mbuyiseni Khumalo and an Indian man delivering goods to a shop in the area, were robbed before they were shot.
“The community is sending a message to everyone. We will not tolerate crime in this area,” said one resident. People living in Fast Track East and Wiggins Umkhumbane now have to fetch their post at the Housing Support Centre.

News in Brief
Fighting against AIDS
The world AIDS conference which was held at the ICC in Durban recently is still fresh in everybody’s minds. We are all aware how the disease is affecting society in both poor and rich countries. But we were shocked to learn that South Africa has the highest rate of infections worldwide.
A preliminary investigation revealed that the infection rate is highest among people between the ages of 18 and 40 years.
It is sad, however, to learn that many young people who are sexually active are still not aware that a person can look perfectly healthy although they are infected with HIV.
Some young people are still not convinced that AIDS is a sexually transmitted disease, and that they should always insist on using a condom to prevent the infection spreading.
The fight against AIDS is being waged in Cato Crest by a volunteer group which has opened a centre known as Philangezwi Support Centre. Philangezwi is an advice centre to help people understand the danger of HIV/AIDS.
Volunteers are engaged in a house to house campaign encouraging people to practise safer sex. They are armed with condoms which they give to people freely. These volunteers have also been trained to give counselling to HIV sufferers.
The centre received recognition for its work recently with the visit of Sandra Thurman, a director of the National Aids Policy based in the White House in Washington, USA
.
Street corner traders receive a boost
The Chesterville Small Business Association (CSBA) has established a community trust known as Umkhumbane Foundation Trust. The Trust is to be used to source funds for the community. The funds are to be used for the upliftment of the community such as training and development.
The Foundation is already in possession of a substantial amount of money which it plans to use in building corner trading stalls.
“We cannot wait for manna from heaven. The fruit vendor at the street corner is part of the community. We will kill two birds with one stone by building a stall for him and enhance our environment,”said Mduduzi Mnikathi of CSBA.
Plans are in the pipeline to establish an education fund to help young matriculants advance their studies at higher institutions. Criteria will be based on results. Links with the President’s funds are being established for this purpose.
